Cozy: the part of you that looks after people

Ability|Caring

01 · StoryHer story

Cozy is one of the first to wake up as you start growing into an adult. It often begins the first time you’re responsible for someone else: a new baby sibling, a puppy that’s suddenly yours to look after.
Before that, you were mostly the one being cared for. Cozy is the one who turns you into someone who cares. If Thorny draws the lines, Cozy makes the space inside them feel safe.

02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease

“I’ve got enough for both of us.”

You’re good at making people feel at home. Around you, people relax, feel they belong, and feel looked after.
You take care of the people and places you love, and you don’t just do things for them. You help them become able to do those things themselves. And you notice your own needs too: when you’re tired, when you need a good meal, when you need a quiet evening to yourself.
The cost: there’s always more need than you can meet. Caring means choosing who to help and who not to, and saying no to someone can feel harder than helping them.

03 · BracedWhen she’s braced

“If they stop needing me, where do I fit?”

She braces to protect you.

When caring becomes something you can’t put down, Cozy shifts from giving to giving yourself away.
In this state, most of your attention goes to other people. It feels like if you stopped looking after them, you’d lose your place with them. So you put yourself at the bottom of the list, and quietly hope someone will one day do the same for you.
What she’s protecting: as long as they need you, you know you belong.
The cost: you make safe places for everyone around you. But after a while, part of you starts to believe safe places exist, just not for you.

04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep

You rarely notice needs, yours or other people’s, until someone else points them out.
Looking after things isn’t really where your attention goes. Often you don’t realize you’re tired, hungry, or running low until someone around you notices first. When someone near you is struggling, you might not pick up on it unless they say so.
It keeps you unburdened. You don’t carry other people’s weight, and they often learn to carry their own.
But not everyone will say it out loud. Some things only get taken care of if someone notices first.

05 · Shows upWhen she shows up

When you notice a friend needs something before they’ve said a word.
When you make yourself a good meal, not for anyone else, just for you.
When you’re the one who notices the empty fridge, the unanswered message, the thing nobody else sees needs doing.

06 · Other halfHer other half|Thorny

As you start growing into an adult, Cozy and Thorny work on the same question: what do I owe myself, and what do I owe the people around me? One answers by caring, the other by speaking up. If both are awake in you, you probably feel pulled between keeping everyone okay and saying what needs to be said.

All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
