Thorny: the part of you that draws your own lines

Ability|Speaking up

01 · StoryHer story

Thorny is one of the first to wake up as you start growing into an adult. It usually begins with feeling stuck inside someone else’s rules: “the teacher says you can’t…”, “your parents won’t let you…”. The lines are always drawn by someone else.
Thorny is the one who starts drawing your own. Before her, you know where other people’s lines are. With her, you start to know where yours are, and you’re willing to hold them.

02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease

“I’ll stand up for myself and the people I love.”

When you run into a rule or a limit, she helps you look at it from another angle and ask what actually matters to you.
You know what you want, and you can say it clearly, without raising your voice. When something is unfair, you don’t charge straight in. You look into it first, and you pick your moment. When someone goes against what you value, you step up, not only for yourself but for the people you love.
Her thorns only come out when they’re needed. You know where your lines are, and you’d rather find a way where both sides walk away okay.
The cost: your first instinct to protect someone is to speak up for them. But sometimes they don’t need you to fight. They just need someone on their side.

03 · BracedWhen she’s braced

“I’ll strike first, or I’m the one who gets stepped on.”

She braces to protect you.

When speaking up becomes something you can’t put down, Thorny shifts from holding her ground to striking first.
In this state, it’s hard to just be you. It feels like the moment you relax, you’ll be overlooked or pushed aside, so you keep proving yourself and holding your place. You’re hard on yourself, and on the people around you too, because things only feel safe when they’re under control.
What she’s protecting: as long as the thorns are out, no one can make you feel small.
The cost: holding on like this is exhausting. And with the thorns always out, it’s hard for people to get close. But not everyone wants to step on you. Some just want to be near you.

04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep

Your lines are rarely your own.
Other people’s rules decide a lot for you, and even when they feel too tight, drawing your own doesn’t quite come to you. When someone crosses a line, the words don’t come out in the moment. It isn’t about keeping the peace. Saying it just isn’t where your mind goes.
It keeps things easy. You rarely end up in conflict, and people feel comfortable around you.
But some lines only exist once you say them out loud.

05 · Shows upWhen she shows up

When something feels off and you say it calmly, because you’ve already thought it through.
When someone you love is being treated badly, and you’re on your feet before you’ve decided to be.
When you’d rather sort something out than win it.

06 · Other halfHer other half|Cozy

As you start growing into an adult, Thorny and Cozy work on the same question: what do I owe myself, and what do I owe the people around me? One answers by speaking up, the other by caring. If both are awake in you, you probably feel pulled between saying what needs to be said and keeping everyone okay.

All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
Curious who’s awake lately?
