Rover: the part of you that wants to go and see

Ability|Setting out

01 · StoryHer story

Rover wakes up when you start longing for something you can’t quite name. A life that used to fit starts to feel a little too small, and you want to see what’s out there.
The call can come at any age, but it’s clearest in your late teens and early twenties. It comes back in midlife, and at every turning point in between: a new job, a new city, a version of you that no longer fits.
Often you know what you don’t want long before you know what you do. That’s usually where she starts.

02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease

“I don’t know what’s out there yet. That’s why I’m going.”

She sets out with you because you want something better: a better way to live, a better version of yourself.
You try things. A new place, a new skill, a new way of spending your days. Some fit, most don’t, and each one tells you a little more about what you’re actually looking for. You’re not afraid of a challenge, as long as it’s taking you somewhere you want to go. And you usually keep one thing steady while everything else changes.
The cost: you may try too many things at once, hoping to find the right one quickly. But some things only grow with time.

03 · BracedWhen she’s braced

“If I stay, I’ll get stuck.”

She braces to protect you.

When setting out becomes something you can’t put down, Rover shifts from going toward something to getting away from where you are.
In this state, you feel stuck and don’t know what to do, and leaving is the only answer that comes. You try one possibility after another, and each time it starts to feel tight again, you leave again.
What she’s protecting: as long as you keep moving, nothing can close in on you.
The cost: you collect a lot of places and experiences, but the restlessness comes along every time. Sometimes what you’re looking for isn’t in the next place. It might be something you’ve been carrying all along.

04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep

You rarely step out of the life you’re in on your own.
“Is there something out there that fits me better?” rarely crosses your mind. The life you have is simply your life, and you don’t often compare it to other possibilities. When change does come, it’s usually because something nudges you: an opportunity shows up, a relationship changes, a door opens or closes on its own.
It keeps your life steady. People around you know where to find you, and they feel safe with you.
But some places only appear once you’ve set out.

05 · Shows upWhen she shows up

When an ordinary week suddenly feels too small.
When you find yourself looking up flights, courses, or listings late at night.
When you know what you don’t want, before you know what you do.

06 · Other halfHer other half|Ardent

When the journey begins, Rover and Ardent work on the same question: who am I, really? One answers by going out to look, the other by going deep into what’s already here. If both are awake in you, you probably feel pulled between leaving to find more and staying to go deeper.

All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
Curious who’s awake lately?
