Drenched: the part of you that packs for rain
AbilityPreparing
01 · StoryHer story
Drenched is one of the first to wake up in you. She grows out of the moments that don’t feel safe: being left out, let down, lied to, treated unfairly. Especially the ones from when you were small.
Almost everyone goes through the moment the world they believed in breaks. Some take it as a reason to believe harder. Drenched takes it as proof of something else: in the end, you’re on your own.
No one gets through this completely dry. Parents are only human, teachers aren’t always fair, and the rules don’t always protect the people who follow them. Everyone has been caught in the rain somewhere.
02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease
“I’ve got a backup plan. Now I can go.”
She’s the one who’s been rained on and doesn’t pretend otherwise. You know it hurt, and you let it hurt, without letting it become the whole story. Like a tree that grows around its scar, you take part of your shape from what happened.
She keeps your expectations real. People will disappoint you, and you know you’ll sometimes disappoint them too. So you save your strength for what actually matters, and you don’t need everything to be safe before you let someone in. You can say “this is hard for me,” and let someone help.
The cost: being ready for rain can become a habit. Sometimes you’ve packed the umbrella before anyone has checked the sky.
03 · BracedWhen she’s braced
“Don’t hope too hard, it hurts less that way.”
She braces to protect you.
When preparing becomes something you can’t put down, Drenched shifts from getting ready for the rain to refusing to hope for sun.
In this state, you’d rather not want things too much. You aim a little below what you really want, because wanting it fully feels like asking to be let down. You count on yourself, and when someone offers help, part of you is already listing the reasons it won’t work.
A small slip doesn’t stay small. It starts to feel like proof that this was never going to work out.
Whatever you start, you leave yourself a way out. Just in case.
What she’s protecting: if you never fully count on anything, nothing can be taken from you.
The cost: the exit you keep open can look, from the other side, like a door you’re already closing. The people closest to you usually feel it first.
04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep
You rarely check the forecast.
When you say yes to something, start something, or trust someone, “what if it doesn’t work out” rarely crosses your mind. When something does hurt, you move on quickly, but you don’t quite go through it. So when something similar comes along, it catches you off guard all over again.
It keeps you light. You don’t spend your strength on things that haven’t happened yet.
But some things only pass once you let them hurt.
05 · Shows upWhen she shows up
When the worst case shows up in your head before you’ve even said yes.
When you hear good news and your first thought is “don’t celebrate yet.”
When someone is standing in the rain, and you don’t just hand them an umbrella, because you know exactly what it feels like.
06 · Other halfHer other half|Hopeful
When you were born, Drenched and Hopeful worked on the same question: is this world safe? One answers by preparing first, the other by trusting first. If both are awake in you, you probably hear two voices pulling in opposite directions.
All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
Curious who’s awake lately?
