Spark: the part of you that makes the thing
AbilityMaking
01 · StoryHer story
Spark wakes up when something in your head won’t leave you alone: an image, an idea, a daydream that keeps coming back. A way of living, a piece of work, something that doesn’t exist yet. You want to see it become real.
She’s been with you since you were small, when making things was as natural as breathing. Somewhere along the way, most of us get busy, and she gets quiet. But she often comes back right after Release has cleared some space. Once something old has ended, there’s room for something new to be made.
02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease
“I have an idea. Let me make it.”
Your mind is full of images, and you let yourself take them seriously. What you make comes from you, not from what you’re supposed to want.
And they’re not just daydreams. You know an idea is only the beginning, and you’re willing to do the slow, unglamorous work of turning it into something real. When something doesn’t come out the way you pictured, you don’t stop there. You adjust and try again.
The cost: inspiration doesn’t always come when you call it. Some stretches are dry, and nothing you make feels right. For someone whose ideas usually flow, those quiet stretches can be hard to sit through.
03 · BracedWhen she’s braced
“If I’m not making something, I’m falling behind.”
She braces to protect you.
When making becomes something you can’t put down, Spark shifts from making what you love to making to prove you’re worth something.
In this state, your work and projects are always on your mind. There are so many ideas in your head, and it feels like if you don’t make them all happen now, you’ll lose your chance. Resting feels like falling behind.
What she’s protecting: as long as you’re making something, you know you still matter.
The cost: you’re always rushing toward the next thing, so you rarely stop to see what you’ve already made, or to notice whether it’s actually finished.
04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep
You rarely make something from scratch.
When you need something, your first thought is to find it, not to make it. You’re comfortable working within what already exists, and you’re good at it. When a problem comes up, you know how to find the best option that’s already out there.
It keeps you practical and focused. People like working with you, because what lands on your plate gets done, and done well.
But some things don’t exist until you make them.
05 · Shows upWhen she shows up
When you can’t find what you’re looking for, so you start making it yourself.
When an idea arrives in the shower and you can’t wait to try it.
When a daydream keeps coming back, and you start to take it seriously.
06 · Other halfHer other half|Release
Further along the journey, Spark and Release work on the same question: what’s really me? One makes what is, the other clears away what isn’t. They often take turns: one fills the space the other has cleared. If both are awake in you, your life may move in cycles of clearing out and starting over, and the hard part is knowing which one this moment needs.
All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
Curious who’s awake lately?
