Giggly: the part of you that lightens things

Ability|Lightening up

01 · StoryHer story

Giggly is a special one. She’s with you even before Hopeful, from the very beginning, when you explored the world by playing. But as you learned to fit in, follow the rules, and take things seriously, she was pushed to the background and fell asleep.
She often comes back later. In midlife, in your evenings and weekends, sometimes even in the most painful moments, when you find yourself laughing in the middle of something hard. She’s the one who’s there at the start of the journey, and again at the end.
Of all twelve, she’s the one who knows how to simply be here, now.

02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease

“Let’s just enjoy this.”

You have an easy, natural curiosity, and you find joy in small things. You don’t need a reason to enjoy something.
You can see the funny side of a hard situation, and that gives you a kind of bounce: you fall, you laugh, you get back up. Sometimes you’re the one who says, lightly, what everyone else was thinking but didn’t dare say. And because you don’t take everything so seriously, you often find a way around a problem that others didn’t see.
The cost: because you make things look light, people don’t always notice when you’re taking something seriously. Sometimes they miss how much it actually matters to you.

03 · BracedWhen she’s braced

“Let’s not make this so heavy.”

She braces to protect you.

When lightening up becomes something you can’t put down, Giggly shifts from enjoying the moment to not letting anything stay heavy.
In this state, when the mood gets serious, you reach for a joke. When things feel dull or tense, you look for something to make it lighter. Sitting in heaviness, yours or someone else’s, feels almost impossible.
What she’s protecting: as long as it stays light, nothing can weigh you down.
The cost: some things are heavy for a reason. When you lighten them too quickly, the people around you may feel you weren’t quite there with them.

04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep

You rarely let yourself play.
Most things feel like they should be taken seriously, and done properly. Fun is something that comes after the real work is done, if there’s time.
It keeps you dependable. People feel taken seriously around you, because you take them seriously.
But some things only get lighter once someone is willing to laugh first.

05 · Shows upWhen she shows up

When you turn a boring task into a game.
When you laugh in the middle of a terrible day, and it actually helps.
When you say the thing everyone was thinking, and somehow make it land softly.

06 · Other halfHer other half|Savvy

Near the end of the journey, Giggly and Savvy work on the same question: what does it mean to be free? One answers by not needing to understand life to enjoy it, the other by understanding it. They often come one after the other: once you’ve understood enough, you can finally loosen your grip. If both are awake in you, the hard part is knowing whether this moment needs simply living, or figuring out.

All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
