Hopeful: the part of you that believes it’ll work out

Ability|Believing

01 · StoryHer story

She’s the only one of the twelve who keeps believing things will work out. The others are all busy controlling the outcome, or bracing for it.
She’s also one of the first to wake up in you. When you were born, she explored the world with you, believing it was safe, peaceful, worth trusting. That belief was pure, and fragile.
Almost everyone goes through the moment it breaks: you meet reality, criticism, unfairness, and the world you believed in falls apart. That’s when Hopeful starts to waver.

02 · At easeWhen she’s at ease

“Just start. The road shows up.”

She’s the one who chose to keep believing after it broke. You know the world is imperfect and that people will let you down, and you still respond with trust. Not because you’re naive, but because you tried the other way and didn’t want to live like that.
She stays with you, keeping your faith intact, without believing everything without question.
When she’s at ease, you’re gentle with yourself and with other people. You do something wrong and you don’t punish yourself for it. Someone treats you badly and you let it go, usually by the next day. You believe that when you need someone, someone will be there.
The cost: when the danger is real, that same momentum can make you slow to notice what’s happening around you.

03 · BracedWhen she’s braced

“Don’t think about it. Thinking stops me.”

She braces to protect you.

When believing becomes something you have to keep up, Hopeful shifts from choosing to trust into not daring to stop.
In this state, you’d rather not see the parts of your parents, your partner, your friends that aren’t good. If you don’t see it, you don’t have to deal with it. The same goes for yourself: you steer around your own flaws, because admitting them is too much. Sometimes that discomfort turns outward, and it becomes someone else’s fault.
What she’s protecting: as long as you don’t look too closely, the world stays whole.
The cost: the less you let yourself look, the more likely it is that the thing you’re not looking at actually happens.

04 · AsleepWhen she’s asleep

You rarely let yourself simply believe.
Every good thing seems to rest on something else. When you meet someone, when something goes well, you find yourself asking what it costs, why they’re doing this, what’s underneath it.
It keeps you from getting hurt. But some things only happen if you believe first.

05 · Shows upWhen she shows up

When you say yes before you’ve worked out the details.
When you forgive someone fast.
When you catch yourself thinking it’ll be fine.

06 · Other halfHer other half|Drenched

When you were born, Hopeful and Drenched worked on the same question: is this world safe? One answers by trusting first, the other by preparing first. If both are awake in you, you probably hear two voices pulling in opposite directions.

All twelve live in you. Some awake, some asleep.
Curious who’s awake lately?
